KOOL & THE GANG
...with special guest THE SUGARHILL GANG!
From Nairobi to Newark, Kool & the Gang has performed continuously longer than any R&B group in history. Their undeniable funk and jazzy arrangements have also made them the most sampled R&B band of all time. Every year, even after a half-century on the road, yields a non-stop schedule of shows across the globe.
Thanks to iconic songs like “Celebration,” “Cherish,” “Jungle Boogie,” “Summer Madness,” and “Open Sesame,” they’ve earned several awards, a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, an induction into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in June 2018 and most recently, an induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame – Class of 2024.
Today, the group enjoys global fame and recognition along with a following that spans generations, due in part to the group’s widely sampled catalogue. Their music is heard everywhere, from movie soundtracks to television commercials, including Rocky, Saturday Night Fever, Pulp Fiction, Wreck-It Ralph and countless others.
Please note: The San Diego Symphony Orchestra does not appear on this concert.
In 1979, the Sugarhill Gang crashed through the walls of the urban cities and into the mainstream of society with the first worldwide rap hit, "Rapper's Delight." Wonder Mike (Michael Wright) and Master Gee (Guy O’Brien) had teamed up with Henry Jackson (pka Big Bank Hank) to become the now famous Sugarhill Gang.
The Sugarhill Gang is believed by many to be the first professional Hip Hop group, because they introduced to the masses (both in the United States and overseas) this unprecedented genre of music. “Rapper's Delight” eventually sold over 8 million copies, becoming the biggest selling rap single of all time. Even today, it continues to appeal to audiences of all ages.
Shortly thereafter, the Sugarhill Gang released such hits as “Apache,” “8th Wonder” and “Living in the Fast Lane.” Wonder Mike and Master Gee teamed up with Henry Williams (pka Hendogg) and DJ T. Dynasty, both of whom have performed with the group for 20 years and counting. The group continues their tradition of creating a party atmosphere that makes everyone dance the night away!.
This Sunday performance is part of the Sunday A Rady Shell package.
