Flying Lotus
Hiatus Kaiyote
Christopher Dragon, conductor
San Diego Symphony Orchestra

An extraordinary concert featuring the visionary producer, composer, filmmaker and Grammy®-winning Flying Lotus (Steven Ellison), whose ability to masterfully combine electronic, jazz, hip-hop and other styles has solidified his status as one of the iconic creative forces of our time. Also featured on this program: Melbourne-based "wondercore" band Hiatus Kaiyote.

About Flying Lotus

Flying Lotus performs this orchestral hip-hop experience featuring works from his highly-acclaimed 2010 album Cosmogramma, joined by Christopher Dragon and the San Diego Symphony in just the second performance of the event following the show's debut at the Hollywood Bowl just three days prior.

In his experimental work as artist-producer and founder of Brainfeeder, the influential, Grammy-winning record label, Flying Lotus mixes electronic music with jazz and hip-hop. Deeply influenced by his genre-defying great-aunt Alice Coltrane—the late jazz pianist-harpist married to saxophonist John Coltrane—Flying Lotus has collaborated with artists including George Clinton, Tierra Whack, Solange, Kendrick Lamar, and film director David Lynch. An alumnus of The L.A. Film School, Flying Lotus recently continued his wide-ranging work in film by executive producing and composing the soundtrack to the 2021 Netflix anime series Yasuke, based on a 16th-century Black samurai.

About Hiatus Kaiyote

The futuristic and soulful music of the Melbourne-based, worldwide-beloved, thrice-Grammy®-nominated Hiatus Kaiyote is described best by the band as “wondercore,” having been sampled on songs by The Carters (Beyonce & Jay-Z), Kendrick Lamar, Anderson Paak, Chance The Rapper and Drake among others.
